What Is Quilting?

Over the years, the art of quilting have remarkably retained its old world charm. But then with in influx of many technological advancements, the intrinsic value of the craft have somehow slowly diminished. For many young people, ‘what is quilting’ seems to be a perfectly normal question. For individuals who remained baffled as to what is quilting, it would be take time to truly appreciate the art of quilting.

If you take a little journey back in time, you would discover that quilters actually have their very own language. Those who are unfamiliar with the lingo will probably be at a loss, especially if they are trying to learn quilting on their own. In fact, even the word itself has a number of meanings. It may refer to as the coverlet that is actually made up of three layers and/or the act of sewing the three layers of cloth together. More importantly, the word quilting has evolved through the years and had become synonymous of patchwork. So if you endeavor to learn the craft, it would be highly beneficial to actually know what is quilting to be able to understand the terminologies used.

Back in the ancient times, quilting was actually present in many cultures as a form of expressing their feelings, as a witness of some historical events or even some of the happy moments of one’s life. When trying to what is quilting, it is important to point out that its very first origins actually came from Egypt and the first ones consisted of some clothing items from an Egyptian pharaoh. It was even reported that even the Templar Knights also used quilting in their armors.  It was in the 17th century when the idea of using the quilting method for making bed coverings was first discovered. Consequently, American housewives saw the advantages and were immediately attracted to the sheer artistry of the craft.

However, the demand for quilted materials lost some of its initial appeal because of the influx of mass-produced linen materials and comforters readily available today. Since it is certainly cheaper, a lot of people would lean more towards such materials. Today, there are a few women who still try to pass on the art of quilting to the next generation. Still, a lot of people are constantly stunned by the beauty and artistry of the almost forgotten craft of quilting. Hopefully, it will not just be an obsolete art that can only be seen in the pages of some historical books.
